Hair raising: 10 November

Success stories of a redundant engineer and an entrepreneurial 14 year old lit up the Club evening on 10 November.

Steve Howdle told how he built up a new career almost by chance when asked to photograph hairstyles for a top salon. One of his images went on to win a national award and appear in international beauty magazines. Other successes rapidly followed. Steve revealed stories of his assignments, negotiations over fees and how much freedom he was given in capturing his stunning images.

Commercial partner, Stephanie Thornton, told how her early ‘business’ of photographing her school mates led on to her adult work in portraiture. She offered top tips on photographing children and families to best effect and thinking ahead to how images were going to be processed so that the initial shoot was properly planned.

Both speakers passed round copies of their work for closer inspection and took a range of questions from members.

You can see examples of Steve and Stephanie’s work here.
