Outings 2017

The Club is delighted to present its outings programme for the Spring and Summer months. This is a summary listing of the twenty events on offer. Further details have been sent to members by email.

Date to be arranged: York Bird of Prey Centre
Birds of Prey
We hope to attend one of the special photography days. They fly the birds towards you, and across in various angles, and take them into woodland. Members need to register their interest (with no commitment at this stage).

Monday 17 April: Middleham
Middleham Race Horse Open Day
An opportunity to see behind the scenes at the many race horse training yards in the town. After meeting racehorses, stable staff and trainers at open yards in the morning, visitors will be able to enjoy attractions on Low Moor in the afternoon.

Sunday 30 April: Various points on route from Bradford to Sheffield via Grassington
Tour de Yorkshire Day Three
Opportunities for some classic cycle race shots and plenty of crowd reactions. Self-guided outing so pick your own vantage point but look out for fellow club members. Approximate timings include: Ceremonial Start in Bradford (12:10), Shipley, Saltaire, Official Start along Otley Road (12:30), Guiseley (12:32), Menston (12:36), Burley in Wharfedale (12:39), Ilkley (12:46), Addingham (12:55), Burnsall (13:15), Skipton (13:38), Silsden Hill Climb (14:00), Haworth Hill Climb (14:17).

Saturday 13 May: Abbey House Museum, Leeds
Steam Punk Market
A great opportunity to capture Steam Punk people in all their glory and examine their fascinating gear. Photographers are welcome. Please ask before taking shots and be prepared to send links to any shots you post on line. The event also runs on Sunday 14 May.

Sunday 21 May: Roundhay Park Lake, Leeds
Martin House 10th Annual Dragon Boat Race
Dragon Boat racing, Tug of War, refreshments and other activities throughout the day.

Tuesday 23 May: Middleton
Life on the Farm
A visit to the farm of a club member. Limited numbers: book in advance. The date is subject to the weather so provide contact details in case of last minute changes. The terrain is mixed but not tough. There are several fords across the moor and a couple of bogs so strong waterproof boots are recommended. Parking available on site.

Friday 9 June: Saddleworth
Oldham & Saddleworth Brass Band Contests
An opportunity to photograph one of the largest gatherings of brass bands and all the fun that goes with it. Register your interest (without commitment at this stage) to get further details nearer the time.

Thursday 29 June: Holy Trinity Church, Leeds
Holy Trinity Church
We have a provisional booking to view the inside of this beautiful Georgian church then climb the tower for spectacular views over the roof tops of central Leeds. Numbers are limited to 10 so please book in advance.

Sunday 16 July: Masham
Masham Steam Rally
Steam, colour and jollity. A wonderful opportunity to photograph steam engines and fair organs.

Saturday 22 July: Newby Hall
Firework Champions
One of the best firework events in the UK. Get great shots of competing spectacular displays all precisely set to music. Bring a picnic or grab food and drink at the event and vote for your favourite display. Book in advance: Adults £18, children £8. A self-guided visit, but look out for other Club members. Wednesday 26 July: Bury
Bury Market
Bury’s Award Winning Market has plenty to offer. With over 350 stalls it is the biggest market in the North. There’s a gull-winged Market Hall, an Open Market section, and a specialist Fish and Meat Hall. Capture the colour and bustle, the patterns and great variety in the produce on offer. Please ask the stall holders’ permission before taking photos. Tripods are allowed (with care).

Sunday 20 August: Yorkshire Air Museum, Elvington
Summer Holiday Thunder Day
A chance to see the Museum’s live aircraft running and experience the sights, sounds and aromas of jet aircraft and vintage propeller aircraft up close. The Museum is a living memorial to all allied air forces personnel, particularly those during the Second World War. It explains what life was like on a typical wartime bomber station, as well as displaying the history of aviation. Admission £12 (concessions available).

Sunday 27 August: Cauldron Falls, West Burton
West Burton Falls
A late afternoon/ early evening shoot at West Burton falls. Taking photos at this time of day the sun has usually dropped and the sheltered light gives you a nice few second exposure to capture the movement of the water without having to use a ND filter.

Tuesday 29 August: Kilnsey
Kilnsey Show
Keenly contested sheep and cattle classes are supplemented by horse events throughout the day – riding classes, shires, hunters, mountain and moorland. Sheepdog trials attract many of the UK’s top dog handlers. Towards the end of the afternoon, there are fell races followed by the excitement of harness racing. Admission £10 for adults. Parking on the showground is £15 at the main gate, entrance A, and £5 at Conistone Bridge, entrance C. Off the showground parking is FREE.

Sunday 3 September: Leeds Dock (formerly Clarence Dock)
Leeds Dock
The waterside in Leeds is a great location for an evening/sunset shoot near the Royal Armouries. We can capture the reflections of the lights from the many cafes/bars and modern architecture.

Tuesday 5 September: Armley Mills
Leeds Industrial Museum
In what was once the world’s largest woollen mill, see textile machines, engines, vehicles, and printing machines, and view the history of Leeds tailoring. Remember your tripod. Light refreshments available. Admission £3.80 (age and Leeds Card concessions available).

Saturday 9 September: Bolton Abbey Station
1940s Weekend on the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway
Enjoy the 1940s re-enactors and rides on the steam trains. Tickets £12 (concessions available). Ask for further information. The event also runs on Sunday 10 September.

Saturday 30 September: Masham
Masham Sheep Fair
An action packed programme with a Sheep Show, Sheep Racing, Craft Market, Bishop Blaize Procession, Fleece Stalls, Wool Competition, Sheepdog Demonstrations, Hand Bell Ringers, Morris Dancers, Art Exhibition and Tours of Theakstons & Black Sheep Breweries. The event also runs on Sunday 1 October.
