You might be surprised to see this praying mantis on a flower in your garden but it was no surprise when Larry James’ s carefully crafted and detailed image won first place in the general colour competition last Friday.
A different flower graced second place with ‘Daisies in Bottle’ by Sharon Sawyer. And Peter Wilson claimed third place with a beautiful sunset scene of the river at Bolton Abbey.
Not to be out done, Peter took first place in the general monochrome category with a broad view of the harbour near Redcar which was packed with interest and detail. Nick Hodgson secured second place with a shot of tough guys battling through mud. But Peter Wilson slipped in again taking third place with a moody shot of the Quayside at Newcastle as dawn broke.
In the panel competition, for between 4 and 6 images on a related theme, Ken Phillip took the honours with ‘A day in the life of a seagull’, showing characteristic behaviour by one of our cheekiest birds. Indeed, it was an evening for bird enthusiasts as second place went to Larry James with a set showing British raptors and Julia Kay won third place with a skilfully collected set on gannets.

Visiting Judge, Frank Lodge, praised the quality of the entries and his conscientious preparation, clear explanations and accurate pacing made for a successful evening.
