The Ilkley Camera Club was very honoured to have Martin Patten as judge for the 2020 Open Mono annual digital competition on Friday.
Martin is a professional photographer and Chairman of the Chilterns Association of Camera Clubs based in Hertfordshire. He’s won many honours and medals in exhibitions around the world and been published in national newspapers. He has a Distinction Award from the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain and is a Licentiate of The Royal Photographic Society.
Martin said he was looking for images that “sing” monochrome and provide a reaction, “I want the images that light our fire”. “As I was looking through the images I was looking for ones that would cause us to stop and scratch our chins”
Continuing on the subject of what makes a good monochrome image Martin said, “black should be black and white should be white with a good range of tones. Textures and strong form always work well in black and white.” “Groups of three are pleasing, if you go into a fancy restaurant and get three sausages on a plate – yes, three works well”.
